What determines Game Pass refund eligibility?

Four details control the route and outcome:

For a prepaid code bought from another seller, check that seller's return policy and whether the code has been redeemed. Do not assume that a directly billed subscription and a retail code use the same refund process. Applicable consumer rights may also affect the result.

Refund versus turning off recurring billing

These are not the same result. Turning off recurring billing stops the next payment and normally leaves Game Pass active until the displayed expiration date. A refund ends or adjusts the paid subscription under the option Microsoft offers in the cancellation flow.

If the account shows Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage or Cancel, Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown. There is no future automatic charge to stop for that entry.

How to request a Game Pass refund

For a subscription billed by Microsoft

1. 1Go to Microsoft Services & subscriptions and sign in.
2. 2Use the Microsoft account that purchased Xbox Game Pass.
3. 3Find the Game Pass subscription and select Manage.
4. 4Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on the label shown.
5. 5Read the cancellation result carefully. Microsoft indicates whether a refund is available for that subscription.
6. 6Choose the refund option if offered and follow the remaining prompts.
7. 7Save the confirmation and verify the subscription status and end date.

If another seller billed you

Use the account and support process of the seller named on the receipt. A prepaid code, partner-billed membership, and subscription billed directly by Microsoft may have different rules. Check the receipt rather than assuming every Game Pass charge came directly from Microsoft.

If you do not recognize the charge

Open Microsoft's official payment investigation guidance and review the order history and family accounts. Report it as unauthorized only if neither you nor an authorized person made the transaction.

What happens after submitting

The confirmation should state whether the subscription ended immediately with a refund or remains active until the expiration date. Keep that message. If a refund is approved, use Microsoft account order history to track the transaction and compare it with the original payment method.

Do not assume that an option available to another account or in another country applies to you. Read the Xbox-specific guidance and the result displayed for your purchase, and ask Xbox Support if the eligibility or amount is unclear.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Game Pass is missing from the account

Try every Microsoft account used on the console or PC and search email for the purchase receipt. A child or family organizer may own the billing account even if another profile plays the games.

There is no refund option

The subscription may not qualify under its timing, type, or region, or it may be a prepaid code. Complete the steps needed to turn off recurring billing if you still want the plan to end. Contact Microsoft Support if the on-screen result conflicts with the purchase record.

You were charged after turning recurring billing off

Check the confirmation date and the billing date. Microsoft's troubleshooting says a cancellation too close to billing may not stop a charge already being processed. Also confirm that the cancellation occurred on the Microsoft account that owns the charge.

A refund was approved but is not visible

Check Microsoft order history and the original payment method. Keep the confirmation and contact Microsoft Support with the order number if the account marks the transaction refunded but the credit does not arrive on the provider's expected timeline.
