Spotify Refund: Policy, Request Help, and Troubleshooting
Spotify's US Terms of Use say it does not provide refunds or credits for partial subscription periods unless required by law or expressly stated in the terms. Canceling Premium leaves it active until the end of the billing period, then the account moves to Spotify Free. If a Premium charge is duplicated, unauthorized, or continued after a confirmed cancellation, use Spotify's official support route; if a partner billed you, that partner handles the refund.
What Spotify's refund policy covers
Spotify's refund policy page separates ordinary cancellation from billing problems:
| Situation | Standard result | Who handles it? |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel Premium during a paid period | Premium remains until the next billing date; no partial-period credit under the US terms | Spotify |
| Cancel during a zero-priced trial | Account moves to Free immediately | Spotify |
| Premium paid through a partner | Partner's terms and refund route apply | The partner |
| Store-bought gift card | Spotify does not refund it | The retailer may have its own policy |
| Spotify permanently discontinues a directly prepaid subscription early | Terms provide a prorated refund for the unused prepaid period | Spotify |
Local law can create additional rights, and Spotify offers different terms by country. Check the country shown on your Spotify account rather than assuming the US wording applies everywhere.
Before asking for a refund
Open the Spotify account page and check Manage your plan and Payment. Confirm whether Spotify or a partner bills the plan. Spotify's cancellation guidance says that if no plan-change option appears, the account is associated with a partner and the partner's contact link appears under Payment.
Review receipts as well. Spotify's receipt instructions let users view recent Premium payments from order history. Record the date, amount, payment method, and receipt ID. If the account shows Spotify Free but the card is still charged, Spotify says Premium may be on another account, so check alternate email addresses and login methods.
Cancel any plan you do not want to renew. On Manage your plan, select Cancel subscription. Spotify says Premium continues until the next billing date, while a cancellation during a zero-priced trial switches the account to Free immediately.
How to ask Spotify to review a Premium charge
If Spotify billed you directly
- 1Sign in to the Spotify account connected to the payment.
- 2Review the plan and receipts and identify the exact charge.
- 3Open Spotify's official refund policy.
- 4Choose the Premium-plan refund help path shown on the page.
- 5If the self-help information does not resolve the issue, use the official contact option while signed in.
- 6Provide the receipt ID, charge date, amount, and a short accurate description.
- 7Save the support response and cancel the plan separately if it is still active.
Focus the request on a verifiable billing issue: duplicate payment, wrong amount, charge after the confirmed end date, or access you did not authorize. The terms do not promise a refund merely because the subscription went unused.
If a partner billed you
Use the contact link displayed under Payment on the Spotify account page. Spotify's terms explicitly direct third-party purchasers to the third party for refunds and subscription management. The partner's receipt—not the Spotify app icon on the device—identifies who controls the transaction.
If you do not recognize the account
Try Spotify's account-recovery and alternate-login options before reporting the charge as unauthorized. You may have subscribed using Apple, Google, Facebook, a phone number, or another email. If no account belongs to you, contact Spotify support and secure the affected payment and email accounts.
Common Spotify billing problems
Spotify Free is shown, but you are charged
The Premium plan is likely on a different account or managed by a partner. Log out and try other sign-in details, then check the payment section of each account. Cancel the account that actually holds Premium.
You canceled but were charged
Compare the cancellation confirmation with the billing date. Because cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the paid period, a charge that posted before cancellation is not reversed automatically. If the payment came after the confirmed plan end date, give Spotify support both records.
The charge amount is unexpected
Check the receipt for a price change, tax, or a different Premium plan. Spotify's US terms say price changes are communicated in advance and take effect at the start of a later subscription period. If the receipt does not match the plan notice, ask support to review it.
You paid through a gift card
Spotify's refund page says it cannot refund gift cards purchased from a store and suggests returning to the store. Whether the retailer accepts a return depends on that retailer's policy.
Next steps
Confirm the billing account, save the receipt, contact the correct biller, and cancel future renewal separately. Subpilot's Spotify cancellation guide covers the direct and partner-billed cancellation paths.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Spotify refund unused Premium time?
The US terms say no refunds or credits are provided for partial subscription periods unless required by law or expressly stated in the terms.
Does canceling Spotify Premium issue a refund?
No. Cancellation normally keeps Premium active until the next billing date and prevents the following renewal. A refund inquiry is separate.
Who refunds Spotify paid through a mobile or internet provider?
The partner handles it. Find the partner under Payment on your Spotify account page and use its official support process.
Can Spotify refund a store-bought gift card?
Spotify says it cannot. You can ask the store where it was purchased, subject to that retailer's return policy.
