How to Cancel a Mailchimp Subscription: Pause, Downgrade, or Close

If you are looking for how to cancel a Mailchimp subscription, first decide which account action matches your needs. Mailchimp lets you change a Marketing plan and, for a monthly subscription subject to limitations, pause it; you can also permanently delete the account. If you joined Mailchimp before May 15, 2019 and need to change or upgrade a legacy plan, follow the legacy-plan guidance and the terms displayed in your account. Deleting an account is not the same as cancelling a plan: it permanently closes the account and cannot be reversed. Before making a permanent change, back up information you may need later. Mailchimp account exports can include audiences, templates, marketing emails, and SMS data. See Mailchimp’s export and backup instructions

Decision framework

Choose the option based on whether you need a temporary break, lower costs, different plan features, or a complete exit from Mailchimp.

  • Pause your Marketing plan if you expect to return. A pause stops monthly billing for either three or six months. Mailchimp limits accounts to two pauses during a 12-month period. Review Mailchimp’s pause rules
  • Downgrade if you need fewer contacts or features. Mailchimp lets you adjust contact limits and switch plans as your marketing needs change. See the Marketing plan change options
  • Consider Pay As You Go if you do not need a monthly Marketing plan. If you are on a monthly Marketing plan and purchase Pay As You Go credits, Mailchimp moves you to Pay As You Go and stops monthly billing immediately. This option is not available if you have a paid Websites plan. Read Mailchimp’s plan-change guidance
  • If you have a paid Websites plan, cancel it separately in your Mailchimp account. Pausing a Marketing plan does not cancel a Websites plan. Mailchimp’s terms say cancellation of a Websites plan takes effect on the last date of the current paid billing cycle. Read Mailchimp’s Standard Terms of Use
  • Delete the account only when you no longer need it. Permanent deletion cannot be undone, so export the information you need before beginning the deletion process. Read Mailchimp’s account deletion guidance

Pausing a Marketing plan has a different effect from deleting an account. During a pause, Mailchimp retains your account data. You can still create and edit emails, view reports, and manage your audience. A Websites plan remains active while the Marketing plan is paused. See Mailchimp’s pause details

Permanent deletion is more final. After deletion, Mailchimp says the account cannot be restored and removes data connected with audiences, campaign archives, and reports. Read the account closure policy

Steps to solve it

Start by identifying the data, plan, and billing outcome that matter to you. Export first if there is any chance you will need audience records, templates, reports, or campaign material after deleting the account.

Checklist item What to do
Back up important data Request an account export before changing or deleting the account.
Choose the account action Decide between pausing, downgrading, switching to Pay As You Go, or permanently deleting the account.
Check timing Review when the selected plan change takes effect before confirming it.
Complete the on-screen process Use the appropriate Mailchimp flow for the action you selected.
Save records Keep your downloaded export and any completion or billing records available in the account.
  1. 1

Export the information you want to keep.

Account exports can include audiences, templates, marketing emails, and SMS data. See available Mailchimp export categories An export is especially important before permanent account deletion because deleted accounts cannot be restored. Read Mailchimp’s deletion guidance

  2. 2

Request the export early and download it from your account.

Mailchimp allows one account export every 24 hours. Larger exports may take time to prepare. Mailchimp sends an email when the export is ready, but the ZIP file is not attached to that email. Instead, download the ZIP file from the Manage my data page in your Mailchimp account. Follow Mailchimp’s export instructions

  3. 3

Review what your export does and does not include.

Mailchimp makes several account-data categories available for export, but not every item can be exported through this tool. Deleted audiences, billing receipts, and website, landing-page, and ad content are not included in account exports. Check Mailchimp’s export limitations Save separate copies of any material that will not appear in the ZIP file before you delete the account.

  4. 4

Choose the plan or account action that fits your situation.

You can pause a Marketing plan for three or six months or downgrade to a different plan. If you are on a monthly Marketing plan, purchasing Pay As You Go credits moves you to Pay As You Go immediately, unless you have a paid Websites plan. Review Mailchimp’s plan options If you want to leave permanently, use the account deletion process instead of treating it as a normal plan cancellation. Read the permanent deletion instructions

  5. 5

Use the documented deletion path when permanently closing the account.

In Mailchimp, go to the profile icon and select Account & billing, or go to Account, then Settings, then Manage my plan. Select Delete my account. Continue through any optional suggestions or Support offer, confirm your password, enter DELETE in the confirmation fields, and select Permanently delete. Follow Mailchimp’s current account deletion sequence

  6. 6

Save the records available after the change.

Keep the downloaded export ZIP file, the completion screen, and any account or billing records Mailchimp makes available. Do not depend on future account access after permanent deletion. Read Mailchimp’s account closure guidance

The basic decision path looks like this:

  • Need a temporary break? Pause the Marketing plan for three or six months. See pause durations and limits
  • Need fewer features or contacts? Downgrade the Marketing plan or adjust the contact limit. Review plan changes
  • Need occasional sending without monthly billing? If you are on a monthly Marketing plan, consider purchasing Pay As You Go credits; Mailchimp says this moves you to Pay As You Go immediately, but it is unavailable with a paid Websites plan. See Mailchimp’s plan-change options
  • Need to leave Mailchimp permanently? Export data, settle any outstanding balance, and complete account deletion. Read Mailchimp’s closure instructions

Data, billing, and account access after your choice

Billing timing depends on the action you select. A paused Marketing plan stops monthly billing and automatically resumes after the selected three- or six-month period. Read Mailchimp’s pause billing details Check the displayed pause end date before confirming, especially if you expect to restart marketing later.

A mid-cycle downgrade takes effect at the start of the next billing cycle. A switch from a monthly Marketing plan to Pay As You Go takes effect immediately. See Mailchimp’s timing rules for plan changes Review the plan-change screen in your account before confirming so you understand the displayed effective date.

Mailchimp requires you to pay any outstanding balance before permanently deleting the account. Read the account deletion requirements Mailchimp’s terms state that monthly Paid Marketing Plans are not entitled to a refund or credit, although Mailchimp may offer one at its discretion. For an annual Paid Marketing Plan, Mailchimp states that you may request a full refund of the annual subscription fee within 60 days of purchase by contacting its customer service department; eligibility and the outcome are determined under its terms. If you no longer want an annual Paid Marketing Plan during its billing cycle, the terms say you can close the account by contacting Sales. Read Mailchimp’s Standard Terms of Use Review the billing details shown in your own account before confirming a plan change, pause, or deletion.

Your data needs deserve the same attention as billing. Account exports can preserve audiences, templates, marketing emails, and SMS data outside Mailchimp. See Mailchimp’s export options Download and inspect the ZIP file before deletion. If you intend to move to another email service, review the destination service’s import requirements before uploading exported audience data.

After account deletion, Mailchimp removes data associated with audiences, campaign archives, and reports, and the account cannot be restored. Read Mailchimp’s permanent deletion policy Keep your export in a secure location and label it with the export date and account name.

Troubleshooting Billing and Account Changes

If you cannot tell whether billing will stop, first identify the action you selected. A pause, downgrade, and permanent closure do not have the same timing. Compare the account's displayed status with the confirmation you saved. For a pause, check the end date; for a downgrade, check the next billing cycle. Mailchimp explains the timing in its plan-change guidance.

If account deletion cannot proceed, check for an outstanding balance and review Mailchimp's closure instructions. Do not delete the account to test whether exported data is complete. Open your saved export first, check the files you need, and keep a backup before taking an irreversible step.
