Duolingo Refund: Policy, Billing Routes, and Troubleshooting

Duolingo's standard refund policy says payments are nonrefundable and it does not give refunds or credits for partially used membership periods unless the law in your jurisdiction requires otherwise. If Apple or Google billed Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max, that store handles the payment and refund, and Duolingo cannot issue it. Canceling stops a later renewal but normally leaves access available through the current paid period.

Duolingo refund eligibility at a glance

Start with the receipt because it identifies the company that can act:

Purchase route Standard policy Where to request help
Duolingo website Nonrefundable under Duolingo's standard terms, except where law requires Duolingo Help Center for a billing error or legal right
Apple App Store Apple controls the payment and refund Apple Report a Problem
Google Play Google controls the payment and refund Google Play refund flow
Partially used membership period No refund or credit under the standard policy The biller, if a legal exception or billing error applies
Virtual items Nonrefundable under the standard policy Duolingo support for an error, not a change of mind

Duolingo's terms also say an auto-renewing subscription continues until terminated. Deleting the account does not replace the instruction to log in and terminate or change the subscription.

Before requesting a review

Find the receipt and record the plan, amount, date, account email, and order number. Check the App Store or Google Play purchase history if the charge is not visible on Duolingo's website. The same Duolingo login may be connected to a subscription managed entirely by a store.

Decide whether the problem is a normal renewal, a duplicate or incorrect charge, or a transaction you did not authorize. Duolingo's standard terms do not promise a refund because you forgot to cancel or did not use the lessons. A billing error or a right under local law is a different issue and should be described precisely.

Cancel future renewal through the biller. For a web purchase, sign in and follow the current subscription-management prompts. For Apple or Google, use that store's subscription settings. Keep the confirmation and the displayed expiration date.

How to request a Duolingo refund or billing review

For a Duolingo website purchase

  1. 1Sign in to the Duolingo account connected to the charge.
  2. 2Review the subscription status and billing details.
  3. 3Cancel renewal if you do not want another term.
  4. 4Open the official Duolingo Help Center.
  5. 5Use the billing or subscription support route shown for the signed-in account.
  6. 6Provide the receipt, charge date, amount, plan, and a factual explanation.
  7. 7Ask for correction of the specific billing error or review under applicable law; do not assume the standard policy guarantees a refund.
  8. 8Save the support response and cancellation confirmation.

For an Apple purchase

Use Apple's official refund request process. Sign in with the Apple Account that paid, choose the refund option, select the Duolingo charge, and submit the truthful reason. Cancel the subscription in Apple settings separately.

For a Google Play purchase

Use the official Google Play refund flow. Google's policy says an app, in-app purchase, or subscription request made within 48 hours may be eligible depending on the details; after 48 hours, it directs users to the developer. Cancel the Google Play subscription separately.

Cancel Duolingo so it does not renew

For direct web billing, sign in to Duolingo and open the account's Super, Max, or subscription settings. Follow the current prompts to stop renewal and verify the expiration status. Duolingo's public terms require users to log in and follow the termination instructions even if they have deleted the account.

For Apple, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Duolingo, and cancel. For Google Play, open Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, choose Duolingo, and cancel. Use the account that appears on the original receipt.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Duolingo says it cannot refund the purchase

Check whether Apple or Google processed the receipt. Duolingo's terms explicitly say it cannot issue refunds for those store purchases. Move the request to the store rather than reopening the same Duolingo ticket.

You canceled but did not receive a refund

That follows the standard policy. Cancellation prevents a future renewal and access generally continues to the end of the current period; it does not reverse the earlier charge.

The subscription is not visible

Check other Apple Accounts, Google Accounts, and Duolingo email addresses. Search receipts for the order number. A family plan manager or a different store account may own the subscription.

A free trial converted to paid

Confirm the exact trial end date and biller, cancel future renewal, and use the biller's refund route. Duolingo's promotion terms say certain extended trials convert automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before they end, so the original offer terms matter.

Next steps

Identify the biller from the receipt, cancel renewal in that billing account, and request review only through the provider that processed the charge. Subpilot's Super Duolingo cancellation guide covers each billing route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Duolingo refund unused subscription time?

Not under its standard policy. Duolingo says it does not give refunds or credits for partially used membership periods unless local law requires otherwise.

Can Duolingo refund an App Store payment?

No. Duolingo says Apple handles those payments and refunds. Submit the request through Apple's official process.

Can Duolingo refund a Google Play payment?

Google handles the payment and refund. Use Google's refund flow; after 48 hours, Google may direct you to the developer.

Does deleting a Duolingo account cancel the subscription?

Do not rely on deletion. Duolingo's terms say you must log in and follow the instructions to terminate or change the subscription even if the account was deleted.
