How to Cancel a WSJ Subscription: Billing Routes and Renewal Checks

How to cancel a WSJ subscription depends on the seller or billing platform named on the purchase record, such as WSJ, Apple, or Google Play. For a subscription purchased directly from WSJ, start with the WSJ Customer Center. If your Wall Street Journal subscription was billed by Apple, use Apple’s subscription controls. If it was billed by Google Play, use Google Play’s subscription controls. If another seller appears on your receipt or card statement, follow that seller’s current cancellation instructions.

Start by identifying the biller before you make changes. Canceling through the wrong account or store may not stop a charge handled elsewhere. Apple advises customers who cannot find an Apple receipt to review their bank or card statement to identify the company billing the subscription. See Apple’s billing guidance.

Understanding your WSJ billing source

Your receipt, confirmation email, and card or bank statement are the best places to identify the billing provider. Look for the company that charged you rather than assuming the service’s app or website handled the payment.

Use the following billing situations to choose the appropriate cancellation path:

  • WSJ direct subscription: If you purchased directly from WSJ, sign in to the WSJ Customer Center and follow the account or support options available for that subscription.
  • Apple-billed subscription: If Apple issued the receipt, sign in to the Apple Account shown on that receipt. Apple-billed subscriptions can be canceled through Apple on supported devices or on the web. Read Apple’s cancellation instructions.
  • Google Play-billed subscription: If the purchase appears in Google Play, use the Google Account that holds the subscription. Google says subscriptions continue indefinitely and charge at the beginning of each billing cycle unless you unsubscribe. Read Google Play’s subscription guidance.
  • Another seller: If a seller other than WSJ, Apple, or Google Play appears on the receipt or statement, use the seller named there. That seller controls its current account tools, support options, cancellation timing, and refund rules.

Do not rely only on the email address used to read WSJ articles. For an Apple-billed subscription, use the Apple Account shown on the Apple receipt. For a Google Play-billed subscription, use the Google Account that holds the subscription. Match the relevant account to the purchase record.

For an Apple-billed subscription, find the Apple receipt and use the Apple Account identified there. If the receipt names a family member’s Apple Account, that person must cancel their own subscription; Apple does not let one family member cancel another person’s subscription. Review Apple Account troubleshooting.

For Google Play, a missing subscription may belong to another Google Account you use. Switch accounts in Google Play and check the subscriptions list again. See Google Play account troubleshooting.

Steps to solve it

Use this quick checklist before canceling:

Check What to do
Identify the biller Review your receipt and card or bank statement.
Use the right account For Apple, use the Apple Account on the receipt. For Google Play, try other Google Accounts if needed.
Find the subscription Look for the subscription in Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions only if that store billed it.
Cancel renewal Follow the biller’s prompts and save the confirmation.
Check later charges Keep the receipt and cancellation confirmation in case you need to discuss a later charge with the biller.

If Apple billed the subscription

  1. 1

Open Apple’s subscription controls on a supported device or on the web.

  2. 2

Sign in with the Apple Account shown on the Apple receipt.

  3. 3

    Open the list of subscriptions.

  4. 4

If the subscription appears, select it and choose Cancel Subscription.

  5. 5

Complete any remaining confirmation prompts and save the result for your records.

Only select a WSJ-related entry if it actually appears in your Apple subscription list. The Apple support page explains that if there is no Cancel Subscription button, or if an expiration message appears in red, the subscription is already canceled. See Apple’s cancellation-status explanation.

If you cannot locate the subscription, search your email for an Apple receipt. Apple recommends signing in to the Apple Account named in that receipt. If you find no Apple receipt, the charge may be billed by another company. Check your bank or card statement to identify that company and use its current support or account tools. Read Apple’s guidance for unidentified charges.

If Google Play billed the subscription

  1. 1

Open Google Play on the Android device.

  2. 2

Make sure you are signed in to the Google Account that has the subscription.

  3. 3

Go to Subscriptions in Google Play.

  4. 4

Select the relevant subscription if it appears.

  5. 5

Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions on screen.

Do not uninstall the app as a substitute for cancellation. Google Play states that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. You must use the subscription controls to stop future renewal. See Google Play’s cancellation warning.

If WSJ billed the subscription directly

If you bought the subscription directly from WSJ, start at the WSJ Customer Center, sign in, and use only the cancellation or support choices displayed for your account. Do not rely on old screenshots or third-party directions for button names, timing, or refund terms because those details can change.

Gather the order confirmation, latest receipt, and card-statement entry before requesting help. These records help identify the subscription and the charge. Save any cancellation confirmation after you finish.

If another seller billed the subscription

If a seller other than WSJ, Apple, or Google Play appears on your receipt or statement, use that seller’s current cancellation instructions. Gather the order confirmation, latest receipt, and card-statement entry before requesting help, and save any cancellation confirmation after you finish.

What happens after cancellation?

After submitting a cancellation request, check the biller’s confirmation and the status shown in the relevant account. Access timing, any remaining payment obligation, and refund availability depend on the billing method, plan, and terms that applied to the purchase.

For a standard Google Play subscription, Google says you can continue using the subscription for the time you already paid for after canceling. Review Google Play’s post-cancellation access policy. That means access after cancellation does not automatically mean the cancellation failed.

Google also distinguishes standard subscriptions from payment plans with multiple payments. If you bought a charged multi-payment plan, stopping renewal does not cancel the remaining payments in that plan. Read Google Play’s payment-plan limitation.

For Apple-billed subscriptions, use Apple’s subscription screen to confirm the status. Apple says an absent cancel button or a red expiration message indicates that the subscription is already canceled. Check Apple’s status guidance.

For subscriptions billed by another seller, review that seller’s current confirmation message, receipt, and terms. Refund availability depends on the biller and the applicable terms. For a Google Play purchase, consult Google Play’s refund information through its subscription help resources. For another biller, check that biller’s current policy rather than assuming a refund or prorated credit is available. See Google Play’s subscription help.

Troubleshooting Common Cancellation Issues

I cannot find the subscription

For Apple, search your inbox for an Apple purchase receipt. Sign in with the Apple Account shown on that receipt. If a family member’s Apple Account made the purchase, that family member must cancel it. Use Apple’s account-identification steps.

For Google Play, switch to other Google Accounts you may have used. Google notes that a subscription that does not appear may be associated with a different account. Check Google Play’s troubleshooting guidance.

If you cannot find an Apple or Google Play record, check your card or bank statement. Identify the company billing the subscription and follow that company’s current instructions. Read Apple’s advice for finding the biller.

I uninstalled the app, but I still see a charge

Removing an app does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Return to Google Play, open Subscriptions, select the applicable entry, and choose Cancel subscription. Follow Google Play’s official process.

If Apple billed the subscription, check Apple’s subscription controls with the Apple Account on the receipt. If another seller billed it, use that seller’s cancellation path.

I canceled, but I still have access

Access can remain active through the end of time already paid for. Google Play explicitly says standard canceled subscriptions remain usable for the paid period. See Google Play’s access policy.

Check the cancellation status before treating continued access as an error. For Apple, an expiration message in red or no cancel option indicates an already-canceled subscription. Review Apple’s status indicators.

I canceled, but another charge appeared

First, compare the charge date with the cancellation confirmation and your renewal date. Then confirm the biller from the receipt or statement. A charge from a different seller, Apple Account, or Google Account may require a separate cancellation.

If you do not recognize the charge or suspect fraud, contact your card issuer or bank immediately using the number on the card or statement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau likewise advises contacting the bank or card provider immediately about a suspected unauthorized charge and retaining records of follow-up. See CFPB guidance. Keep your cancellation confirmation, purchase receipt, and the later charge record. For a charge you recognize but believe was billed incorrectly, contact the biller identified on the receipt or statement and explain the dates involved; retain the same records if you also discuss it with your payment provider.

If you manage several recurring services, Subpilot subscription management is a first-party page for subscription management and cancellation tracking. Check its current integrations, pricing, and platform support before relying on it for a specific account.
