How to Cancel Ancestry
To cancel an Ancestry membership bought on the Ancestry website, sign in to your account, open the Membership section, choose the active plan, and select Cancel membership or Cancel trial. Complete every prompt that follows. A successful cancellation produces a confirmation number on the screen or sends confirmation by email. Save that record. Ancestry’s cancellation help explains the current account process.

- 1

Save the on-screen confirmation number or email. For an app-store purchase, keep the store’s cancellation record.
- 4
Verify the status.
Check the updated subscription status and renewal date.
Choose the right option for your membership
| Your situation | What to do | Important timing point |
|---|---|---|
| Website membership billed monthly | Cancel from the Ancestry Membership section | Cancel at least two business days before renewal to avoid the next charge |
| Website plan longer than one month and paid upfront | Cancel from the Ancestry Membership section | Access generally continues through the paid term |
| Trial | Use Cancel trial in the Membership section | Complete cancellation before the trial converts to paid service |
| Purchased in the Ancestry app | Manage it through Apple, Google Play, or Amazon | Store rules and renewal timing may apply |
| Free Registered guest account | No cancellation is needed | It is not a paid recurring membership |
| Gift membership that does not renew | No cancellation is needed | It does not renew automatically |
| Family plan invitation | Ask the purchaser to manage it | An invited member may not control billing |
Troubleshooting cancellation problems
Missing cancellation button
Check the billing account. Free guest accounts and non-renewing gifts need no cancellation; family-plan invitees may not control payment.
No email
An on-screen confirmation number can also prove completion. Check spam and membership status. Contact support if you have neither proof nor a changed status.
Charged afterward
For a monthly website plan, the cutoff is two business days before renewal. Compare cancellation and charge dates. Send your proof to Ancestry or the app store that processed payment.
Purchaser unknown
Check whether it is a family plan, gift, or shared household account. The purchaser may need to make the billing change.
What happens after cancellation
Paid-term access
Website subscriptions longer than one month and paid upfront generally remain accessible until the term ends.
Account retention
Cancelling renewal is separate from closing your Ancestry account. Check the membership terms for any service-specific access limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a refund after I cancel?
Refund eligibility depends on the plan. Ancestry’s terms state that monthly subscriptions are generally not refundable, and longer upfront plans generally continue through the paid period instead of generating a refund. Review the current terms for exceptions and applicable rights.
